April 19, 2018

Healthcare-associated infections (HAI), or infections acquired in healthcare settings are better known as nosocomial infection. Nosocomial infections are the most frequent adverse event in healthcare delivery worldwide. According to World Health Organization reports, hundreds of millions of patients are affected worldwide by healthcare-associated infections each year, leading to significant mortality and financial losses for health care systems.

Each year, few thousands Canadians die from hospital-acquired infections and many more get infected. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE), and Clostridium difficile (C. diif.) are three bacteria commonly found in Canadian hospitals. They can cause symptoms ranging from severe infection to septic shock and death. Treatment is more costly than prevention. Costs may be more for the treatments related to MRSA patient per year due to prolonged hospitalization, special control measures, expensive treatments and extensive surveillance.

The role of health care workers in nosocomial infection transmission has been documented and the importance of infection control including hand washing techniques in preventing such transmission has been understood.  It is quite important to keep high level of compliance of the asepsis and infection protocol in preventing nosocomial infection.
