1. HEALTH INFORMATICS - MEDICAL & DENTAL RECORD MANAGEMENT (Basic & Intermediate program)

This Online Certificate Program at Springfield College helps you develop the knowledge and skills needed to work efficiently as a knowledgeable healthcare personnel in a health care setting. This program prepares students to gain the essential knowledge and information to work as a responsible healthcare staff in variety of medical, dental & healthcare facilities such as physician’s clinic, specialist’s office, dentist’s office, dental hygienist’s office, nursing homes and hospital setups. It also teaches the students much-needed skills to properly educate, explain, and communicate with the clients/patients related to various medical, dental, and healthcare procedures. It focuses upon the need to meet legal and ethical responsibilities while caring for the patient’s physical and emotional needs by discussing various real-life case scenarios. This program is designed to provide a concrete theoretical foundation and accurate knowledge on different types of medical and dental records, census procedure, and various hospital records.

It also teaches about various Central Administrative Records(CAR) and variety of hospital, medical and dental records, different filing systems, patient charts, handling of files and records under confidentiality regulations, rules of filing and management of medical patients records in a variety of medical and dental settings.

Course Outline

  • Knowledge and information of variety of medical and dental records, filing systems and significance and application of electronic / paper health and medical/dental records in modern healthcare systems.

  • Various IP & OP files maintenances and Central Administrative Records(CAR)

  • Significance of informed consent, types of consent and their applicability, foundation of patient consent as a decision-making capacity,

  • Clients’ rights and right to refuse, advance directives

  • Standard of care and failure conditions

  • Good Samaritan Laws and immunity and special mandatory reporting requirements

  • Detailed discussion and knowledge of Laws such as HIPAA, PIPEDA, Confidentiality, Privacy, PHIPA and CMPA and their applications in daily medical and dental practices.

  • Learning about the important practices of Subpoenas, Court Orders and Search Warrants and appropriate responding, compliance, and motion to quash.

  • Knowledge and information about Privacy Rule Definitions, Common Misconceptions-Healthcare Operations, De-Identified Information, and disclosure pursuant to an authorization related to medical practices and hospital record management.

  • Application of Electronic medical record in recording patient history, protected health information (PHI), demographic details, diagnostic and treatment records, patients’ charts, and scheduling.

2. HEALTH INFORMATICS - MEDICAL & DENTAL OFFICE PROCEDURES AND HEALTH SERVICES ADMINISTRATION - (Advanced program)

This skills enhancement Program helps students to develop the knowledge and much needed skills to work competently as a well-informed healthcare personnel in a health care setting. This program is designed to provide a solid theoretical foundation and precise knowledge on different types of Medical and dental office procedures, reception of clients/patients, administrative and clinical responsibilities in diverse healthcare setups and client/patient scheduling for various purposes.

The program provides students with a deeper understanding of the increasingly complex managerial or administrative tasks performed in health institutions, medical offices, dental offices, hospitals, nursing homes, medical and dental surgery units, and health-related government departments. The students will learn in depth knowledge and information about the tasks such as implementing quality improvement initiatives, multitasking efficiently in diverse health services systems and would be able to apply principles related to quality health care services in diverse healthcare systems. It focuses upon delivering a balance of social, economic, cultural, medical, legal, and ethical approaches to the understanding of diverse aspects of the ideal healthcare delivery systems along with the management sciences.

  • Detailed discussion and knowledge of patient reception, scheduling, office supply, meetings organization, procedure manual, laws and ethics and diverse clinical responsibilities as an efficient medical and dental office assistant/administrator.

  • important knowledge of managing office supplies and maintenance of inventory

  • Important practices of patient communication, gathering data, methods for scheduling patient appointments, scheduling diagnostic appointments or booking surgeries etc.

  • Confidentiality Act, privacy Act, and medical ethics.

  • Legal and ethical responsibilities while caring for the patient’s physical and emotional needs by discussing various real-life case scenarios.
